Garmin Nuvi 260 – Run Off Car Charger Or Battery?

We got got a Garmin nuvi 260 today. I've been researching them for some time now but haven't been able to find an aswer to a nagging question:
Is it better to keep the GPS plugged in while driving and letting it draw power from that
-or-
let it use up all the battery power and only use the adapter to recharge it with?
The way I understand it, the battery starts to develop a "memory" if you recharge it wouth it being completely depleated to begin with.
Ideally, the way we would like to use it is to keep it plugged into the car adapter and rely on the battery only when we use it for walking and stuff. But we don't know if that would shorten the battery life.
Thanks!

No problem at all using the lighter or accessory plug. Also, when carrying the GPS on walking trips, turn it on, get directions, turn it off and put it back into your pack until you need directions again. This way the battery charge would last for many days!
Some older batteries used a material that developed a memory, yours is not on of them ~~~~~
