How Do I Make Up A Cool Guitar Riff Or Song?

There are some guitar players out there that can make up a riff that go really well with lyrics to a song? How do I do that? Do I just play around with the notes? Thank you.

Skip the music theory for now. (Although I do recommend getting familiar with the pentatonic scale eventually)
I like Rie’s answer the best…play around with notes.
Also, when you’re away from your guitar…hum little melodies in your head, or try to hum guitar riffs…you’d be surprised what you can come up with. The problem is…transferring your thoughts to the guitar….that’s where the hunt and peck method comes in.
Just experiment…there are no rules. Have fun.
If you can record yourself playing and writing, you might surprise yourself with the ideas you come up with. Noodle around on the guitar while recording…then put the recording away for a week, bring it back out and listen. Ideas will pop out of everywhere.
Best of luck, and keep practicing till those fingers bleed.

You need to learn music theory, basically knowing pentatonic and major scales will help you make up a cool riff to a song. You need to be able to play in the right key. When you know the key of the song and know where the scale is on the guitar neck, you’ll be able to play a riff to anything.

Just playing around with notes is a good place to start. When I write a song I generally have an idea of how I want it to sound, which tends to help. Other times I have a melody in my head that I don’t recognize from anywhere which I’ll then write out to save for future reference. You can’t force music, just have fun with it!

Learn music theory; it is the math behind the music that makes it sound good, it can be boring at times but you will need it if you want to compose music effectively. In order to construct a riff or a melody you need to know how they work, and theory is the only way to learn those things.
