Slate Pool Tables

Master Your Game with Slate Pool Tables

By Pete Gross

Slate Pool Tables are the number 1 choice, actually they are considered the only option by professionals when choosing a pool table, they swear by the consistency and accuracy of shots when playing on slate bed tables; and most amateurs or home players will choose a slate bed pool table for the same reasons, because there is nothing more frustrating than missing a well-executed shot because the pool table is warped.  Plus most slate tables don’t require the mammoth sized rooms that other tables need and they’re relatively cheap in price, but they certainly aren't cheap in quality - the slabs of slate, which is a pliable rock, can be ground down to an absolute flatness, which is the most ideal playing surface for pool.  Unlike wooden surfaces, slabs of slate can be custom cut to the dimensions of a table without worry of warping over time.  A slate tablet, however, can add several hundred pounds to a pool table as it is by far the heaviest material that can be used.  However, if you decide to make your choice based on weight issues know that most woods warp over time, causing the value and effectiveness of the table to plummet.  Quality slate is hands down the key to making a quality pool table.

If you've ever played on both table variants you know the difference between the less reliable wooden type and the smooth running slate bed table.  How I learned the difference…

The Proof Is In the Table

A few years ago, one of my brothers decided to do me a huge favor by teaching me how to play pool.  Well, after becoming what I thought to be a pretty decent pool player I decided to challenge my girlfriend’s husband in a friendly non-monetary match.  I had purchased my own pool stick from a billiards shop and was proud to arrive at my opponent’s house with my stylish custom-weighted stick in hand.

I diligently and consistently followed the instructions given to me by my brother.  Several shots later after watching my balls roll off center on the warped wooden pool table…my opponent was the victor.

What I learnt, until you master a craft, don’t challenge a master.  And know that playing on a quality built table will make the difference in your game.

Although factors like leveling the table play a major part, high quality slate bed pool tables give the ball a straight roll every time you play a shot, slate is a strong material that isn't prone to inconsistency, dipping, or warping as with other materials, such as wood.  So, if you want to be the best or just play like the best, choose a slate pool table.
